Blood Brothers 2 is the latest sequel to the hit game Blood Brothers 1. Contrary to the old TCG mechanics of the game, the latest installment implements some strategy into the hero collection process. In this beginner’s guide, we will go over the most common questions that you may run into when you first start the game.
It should be noted that this beginner’s guide may be too simple for some of the more advanced players. However, most of the new players should find this guide helpful when you first starting the game.

Class Types
All of your blood brothers familiars or units are divided into 3 categories of units – Melee (Sword), Ranged (Bow), or Mount (Horse). They offer “elemental” or class weakness strengths to one another. The relationship is as followed: Melee > Mount > Ranged > Melee. The upper hand will deal double the damage and receive half the damage.

Rarity
In Blood Brothers, 3 stars or above is considered “rare”. In general, you want to move into three stars or higher as soon as you can for your main team. Higher rarity heroes have better leader skills and stats. In general, you should avoid spending coins to train the weaker units. The units can have all the stars lighten up with 1 gray stars, this means that they can “evolve”.

Evolution and Ascension
As mentioned in the previous section, any familiar hero with the grayed out star can be “evolved” into a higher rarity. To evolve, you need to have the hero at max level with max number of ascensions. To receive ascension, you need to get copies of the same hero through either pact pull or stage grinding.

Ascension also increases the level cap of the hero.
Skills
Skills can be chosen to be cast after certain number of terms by your heroes. Cast the skills by swiping up the character during the unit selection. It should be noted that the skill counter carries over for your arena fights.

Different heroes have different skills. Some skills are better than others so your best bet is to test out different combinations of heroes.
Leader Skills
Your heroes have leader skills that can boost the overall power of your team. Heroes that are rare or 3* or higher have leader skills. You much place the hero in the leader slot for the leader skill to take in effect and activate.

Mastery
Mastery are account based skills that unlock by having your heroes “research” into. In general, higher rarity and level heroes research mastery faster than the weaker ones. Each mastery is a skill tree that unlocks sequentially. You unlock major mastery category with every chapter that you beat. Always have your heroes research the mastery skills.

Each category of mastery skill can only have 1 active hero researching. By switching to another skill type you will effectively stop out the process.

Basic
Depending on the story stages, you are allowed either 1~3 different team squads into battle. Each stage will require certain amount of energy to proceed. While fighting the story campaign, make sure that you protect your home base and clear the enemy base before your tun runs out.

In story mode, you get first strike when you attack enemies on the global map, so always try to count moves against the AI players to receive the upper hand. You almost always want to get first strike, having first strike usually allow you to take much less damage. Since you can kill the enemies one turn ahead of time.
Base Healing
If you move the unit back into home base, the unit will receive some light healing. This can be useful for stages with lots of turns and enemies. You can defend your home turf and do some heals as necessary. It should be noted that your unit does not recover HP by staying at the home base.

Assisted Attack
If you attack an enemy square, while having another unit in its adjacent square (but not the one of your originating attack unit). The other unit will deal assisted attack damage. This can be helpful at times to wear down enemies much quicker. However, it should be noted that the AI enemies can also deal assisted attack damage on your team.

Tactics
10 Tactic points are rewarded with every passing turn. Tactics allow you to either heal your self, debuff or damage enemies. You can unlock more types of tactics through mastery.

Capturing Information
If you beat the stage, you will be able to “capture” the heroes into your team. In general, the first capture usually have higher chances, and the chances increase with every failure attempts.

EXP and Gold Reward
The EXP’s in Gold rewards are given at the end of the stage after you beat it. However, the more enemies that you kill, the more EXP and Gold that you are given based on the enemies. So that if you can, always try to kill everything on the map to receive maximum amount of EXP and Gold.

After you capture the hero the first time, you can proceed again to attempt for more copies of the hero to obtain higher ascension value. However, the further attempts start with a small 0%, and you can gain 1~5% with more attempts. You will typically succeed once you get to 20~30% with a couple of tries, since you really have 1 out of 5 chances after passing 20%. It is typically rare for you having to get to 40~50% range before you successfully recruit.
It should be noted that some stages have “hidden” recruits that occur either by chance or by how you respond to quest questions.
Pact Pulling
Free Pact Pulling
You have three different free pulls throughout the day. It is a decent way for you to get your weaker or second tier heroes up to speed. The times are “noon”, “dawn”, and “twilight”. To translate that into real life hours, you get free pulls on Eastern time during these hours – 12:00 AM, 7:00 AM, and 12:00 PM. You can pull those packs anytime in between the time periods, so that you do not have to pull on the hour.

However, once you passed the time, you will lose it and can only claim the latest one available.
Premium Pact Pulling
You can spend 5 blood sigils to do premium pulls. The premium pulls guarantee three star or above heroes.

Event Pact
Once in a while, the game offers special events that either have better chances, better costs, or special bonuses toward specific classes of heroes. You will have to play the game pretty frequently to tackle those updates.

Good Starting Unit Grinds
For the purpose of this guide, we will note two specific units that are “hidden” that are good for starting players.
The first one is the three star (4* evolved) Xanti in Chapter 1: Blood Brothers, Ride Out! – Wingfeathers. You can recruit him normally if you select recruit instead of execute during the selection.
The second one is the three star (4* evolved) Nunu in Chapter 2: No Orders, Bort!. After defeating the boss Nunu for the final stage, sometimes you can capture him and recruit him into your team. Many times new player miss it when they do not see the recruit screen during their first run. We estimate the chance to be about 20~30% for Nunu to not escape.
After your first capture, you should avoid grinding them to 4* as early as you can. Instead, try to advance as much as you can in the normal story mode. The reason is that you really should try to unlock as many mastery as you can, before embarking on the evolution journey. It can take a huge amount of energy before you farm enough units to get them to higher rarity.
Basic PvP Strategy
If you are having trouble winning PvP in Blood Brothers 2, below are some of the strategy guidelines to help you win the battles. It should be noted that strategy and tactics is only half of the battle, sometimes you still have to put in the time to level up and grind your heroes for a much higher win rate.
Team Composition
A great team composition is one that you can anticipate enemy moves. In our opinion, the best PvP team composition at the time of writing this guide is 3 mount unit and 2 bow unit. It may differ if you actually pull some strong melee units from the premium pacts.
A great team composition is one that you can anticipate enemy moves. In our opinion, the best PvP team composition at the time of writing this guide is 3 mount unit and 2 bow unit. It may differ if you actually pull some strong melee units from the premium pacts.
The reason is that most players use Xanti and Undo for their bow units. So you can counter those with the mounts. Avoid having melee since they can get killed pretty quickly from Xanti and Undo’s AoE skill uses.
Or if you have grind for a strong Nunu, you can go for 2 Bow, 2 Mount, and 1 Melee as Nunu.
This suggestion may change depending on the “free” units that the game decide to give out in the future, or the generic units that people typically use.
Skill Turn Counting
Count the number of turns before your skills get activated. Adjust your strategy accordingly, sometimes if your strong units only need 1 more turn to unleash the skill. Save him instead of having him die on you.

Defensive Gambit
The unit heroes prioritize their attacks for the heroes in front of them. This means that sometimes you may have to sacrifice your own units, for some breathing room before you can cast your own skills.

Strategic PvP Loss
Since skills turn count carry over to the next battle. Sometimes it can work to intentionally give up on battles, so that you can have full load of readied skills for the next round of PvP. The easiest way is to simply look at enemy unit’s HP, if they seem and look overwhelming, just simply play the battle out without using your skills. So that all of your skills become loaded for the next battle.

Unleash Skill Timing
Know the skill characteristics of your heroes. Some heroes cast AoE, some cast random attacks, some do single target and some do heal. Make sure you know what they do so that you can use them at the right time. Time the skills with the attack or defensive turns to maximize their effects.

Game Theory
The PvP in Blood Brothers 2 comes down to a basic Rock, Paper, Scissor kind of game. You want to guess what your opponent will do based on their own unit inventory. You can typically get a good handle of the player based on their initial selections. See if they are defensive, tricky, or absent minded.

Your goal is to always get the upper hand of picking the “right” advantage heroes. You can typically settle the battle with 2 good calls, given that the two sides are relatively equal in unit strength.
Observe what your opponent do with their unit’s HP, skill timing, and their overall units is key to win.
Maybe it’s just my cynicism flaring up again, but when any free-to-play game immediately dazzles you with a couple of easy battles, then showers free gifts and beautiful pixels upon you, it’s hard not to feel like you’re being carefully corralled and surreptitiously groomed. Blood Brothers 2 clearly comes from a heritage that knows how to monetize such a game, and the result of it deftly teasing the coins from my typically-impenetrable wallet is that it’s difficult to see whether or not there’s a great game beneath the rubble of its expert salesmanship.First things first, let’s look at what you get in your first hour, before the coinage begins to rain. The land of Arnashia is once again in turmoil, as a century has passed since the first game. Evil commanders are knocking on the gates of your citadel, which is protected by the legendary might of the eponymous Blood Brothers.
A narrative begins to swirl in the ether around the turn-based combat that speaks of conspiracies and old adversaries, but you’ll likely lose track of who hates who, and why they’re attacking each other. It’s not a bad plot line by any means, but you can feel that some of the purpose behind the gothic fantasy setting has been lost in translation. So you quickly learn to skip the extended talkie bits, and drive toward the action as fast as possible. Which all begins on a small grid, with your castle at one end, and the enemy’s at the other. This is actually a clever interpretation of a battlefield, since you or your adversary might not actually be at a castle, keep or citadel. But this playing field helps to visualize driving them from their attacking position, or making new ground in the overall war.
You move one square per turn, as does the enemy, moving forces into position before a fight takes place.Wherever possible it’s important to try and be the aggressor. If you move onto a square occupied by the enemy, you administer the first attack, and that can make all the difference. If you’re attacking, your first move can even out the difference between a larger enemy force and your own, or you might even wipe them out without taking a single hit.
It’s not always possible, but this is a big part of Blood Brother 2’s strategic component; maneuvering into the optimal position before fighting.Once on the battlefield, three regiments go up against three enemy regiments. You can upgrade and train your forces through the arena, in fights, through the online PvP matches, and via in-app purchases (of course), but the most important factor is their type. You’ve cavalry, archers and infantry, and each has its strengths and weaknesses. Infantry is most effective against cavalry, cavalry against archers, and archers against infantry. So you aim to put the right regiment up against its ideal adversary, and thereby maximize your attack and defense. So, how does all this work as a free game? Pretty well, up to a point, and then the paywall drops like an anvil.
Admittedly, you can struggle on without buying any ‘sigils’, but you’ll rarely find yourself in a fair fight beyond chapter one. And it’s not always where you’d expect to pay that gets you. The army might be faring well, but the number of allotted moves within the grid is often deliberately too low for any tactic other than heading straight for the final battle. Cough up just a few coins, and you’re rewarded with more moves than you actually need; at least, within this fight.Similarly, recruiting new commanders is a long and difficult task, as you have to defeat, capture and convince them to join your ranks.
It’s possible, especially early on, but more often than not you’ll need to bring them in, temporarily, from other dimensions. Every day the game awards you three free helping hands from these extra-dimensional generals, but all that really serves is to demonstrate that your army can’t make it alone. And if you want to forge ahead, you now know what you need to do; hire (literally) more men.But Blood Brothers 2 isn’t entirely cutthroat. It gives a good amount away for free, and the visuals and audio are of AAA standards. So it’s not asking you to shell out for a substandard game, although the turn-based combat is probably more simplistic than the genre’s hardcore – being those who are more likely to buy an upgrade – will appreciate. The depth isn’t really there.
It’s just well camouflaged. So well camouflaged, in fact, that the free game is a good way to spend an hour or two until F2P fatigue sets in, and by that stage you’ll know whether or not Blood Brothers 2 is a game you want to drop real money on. And ultimately that’s a pretty fair exchange, and demonstrates the developer’s confidence in its product.
Making up your own mind about the game is enjoyable, and spend-safe.
